What to know about this year's SLAM Competition…

Rapid technology innovation has allowed the re-invention and disruption of major industries such as transportation (UBER, Lyft, Lime), grocery (Instacart, Postmates) and hospitality (Airbnb).  Many of these industries are moving from brick and mortar to click and mortar services. Most disruptors use software that is helping to create service-based models enabling prodigious shifts in consumer behavior.

The healthcare industry is undergoing the exact same re-invention through the use of digital health tools such as apps, wearable sensors, AI and VR. If we can monitor our homes, families, and pets from our cell phones, why not our health? We believe this medical care disruption will create many multi-billion dollar companies in the next 5-10 years.

For our SLAM competition we want you to think about being at the center of the healthcare system where all the experiences are customized and catered to you. Imagine the physical and emotional obstacles that can be overcome in the medical care experience – everything from finding parking at the clinic or hospital to asking important questions of your health care provider even after you’ve left their office to a new model of pharmacy service that actually provides personalized medicine. What about easy access to trusted health care experts? Or having all your personal medical information portable and in one place? What about medical care cost transparency?

These are the challenges patients and family members face in today’s healthcare world  that technology can overcome. The evolution from sick care to life care is based on digital health tools that pave the path.

Enter the 2018 SLAM Competition for a chance to win the $10,000 prize!

We want you to think about the question:

“How can digital health make the entire health care experience more personal, more efficient, more holistic, more affordable and accessible and more comforting for each individual?”

The challenge for your team is to present a unique "Medical Care: From Sick Care to Life Care” digital solution focusing on one of today's major healthcare problems. You will flip the current model of healthcare by putting the patient at the center of healthcare. Create a vision and tell a story of a world where medical care is a service and how this will change the experience for both patients and doctors. We ask that participants focus on creating a solution that acts as a service, rather than a standalone device, for example.

Teams need to submit a presentation for the judges, experts who represent the Medical, Entertainment, Engineering, Investment and the Tech communities. The judges will review and select the top 4-5 groups to present at our Annual Body Computing Conference Slam Dinner on Sept 27. The pre-conference dinner includes dozens of influential thought leaders.

The winning team from the evening’s SLAM event will then present their concept at the 12th Annual Body Computing Conference the next day.

We encourage multidisciplinary work and can provide consultation to teams, clinicians, behavior scientists, computer scientists, and storytellers.

Entrants may present their ideas for consideration in any format, including but not limited to:

  1. Slides

  2. Video

  3. Software (e.g. app, VR, AR)
